They are Coming! Not the British Though

As I prepare my 10th and maybe my last installment of the Green Noise I leave you with a final post about the Olympics. It's coming!! I love the olympics, it is my favorite part of the year. I prefer the summer games over the winter games but it is still fun to watch the winter games. So coming this February you will find me sitting on the couch doing nothing but watching the greatest athletes in the world compete on the highest stage. I hope I don't have much homework over that time period.

Is Poker even a Sport?

Last night on ESPN 2 they aired the world series of poker final table. I stayed up for a little while and watched just to see what was up. I enjoy to play poker with my friends and will watch it on occasion for a short period of time. While I was watching last night I was thinking, is this really a sport? Though it was on a sports TV network does it really constitute as a sport? I personally think it falls in the same category as NASCAR. Either way I was just amazed at the amount of money you win for not even winning the whole thing. There was some guy who got over a million dollars and he got like 10th.

The Taunt

Lets face it, professional athletes are cocky. You would be too if you knew you were one of the best athletes in the world, but is it necessary to show off. In the Monday night football game last night Golden Tate caught a pass and then ran it in for a touchdown. On his way to the endzone Tate waved and taunted the safety of the Seahawks. It was cool to see but very unnecessary. He was fined a 15 yard penalty but the touchdown still counted. Now the question is should he have gotten punished more or was that ok? Now in the NFL if there is any excessive celebration you will get penalized. I loved touchdown dances and I think they should come back. Celebration is just part of the game. He just scored a touchdown on the biggest stage of football let him have a little fun.

Basketball is Back

Tonight my favorite time of the year starts, no not the countdown till Christmas, Basketball season! You will definantly find me on my couch tonight watching. The first game is the Chicago Bulls and the Miami Heat. I pick bulls all the way, only because I hate the Heat and Lebron. Being a Cleveland fan it is easy to see why I hate him. If you don't know what I'm talking about go look up "the decision" on youtube or google. Plus Derrick Rose is back and he is one of the most explosive players in the game. The other game is San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angelos Lakers. My pick is San Antonio. I don't really care who wins I just want to see some upbeat fast pace basketball.

PSAC Conference

Most of my posts have a focus on professional sports so today I am going to change my focus to something a little closer to me. The Slippery Rock Cross Country team. Our team is currently finishing up our season and heading into the postseason. This Saturday we are headed to Kutztown for the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Meet. All of the best teams from our conference will be there vying for the title. The men's team goes in ranked 4th and the women's team is ranked 7th. We look to drastically improve on those numbers. So if you find yourself bored on Saturday morning feel free to make the trek to Kutztown to support us.

If Kobe's Fat, Then What Am I?

Kobe Bryant is finally back to basketball. After tearing his Achilles last year he is finally on the road back to playing again, though the team says it is unlikely he will play any preseason games. He also has no timeline. His comment is that timelines are stupid, he will be ready when he is ready. He has two things that he wants to do before he makes his return. He is currently working on a plan to strengthen and stretch his Achilles, and he wants to do three weeks of vigorous training in order to get "his fat ass back in shape".
This is a good sign of things to come and we can defiantly look forward to one of the greats play ball for one more year.

Are the Browns Legit?

The Cleveland Browns come into this Sunday riding a 3 game win streak and sit atop the NFC North. The fun part about that stat is that they did it with a backup quarterback. They also traded their star running back before this streak. Maybe it was all for good.
The browns are not a team to look down on though. With their high powered defense that is able to stop the run (held Adrian Peterson to 88 yards) and a few surprises on the offensive end of the ball, the browns might just have the chance for a playoff push. Though it is still early in the season a fan can wish.
But I think that the thing that makes the browns fans the happiest is that the Steelers are 0-4.

Hockey's Back?

So it appears that the hockey season is back in full swing. I grew up in northeast Ohio where the only hockey team we have is the Lake Erie Monsters, which is a minor league hockey team. So before I came to college here at Slippery Rock I never followed hockey and didn't really understand the game at all. Now that I have moved into Penguin territory I feel like I need to follow the sport a little bit or at least have a general understanding of how the game works. I have come a long way since last year, I don't mind watching games and I now know what icing is (that was the most confusing topic I faced at the beginning).
Well, whether I follow the sport or not, I'm sure that all of my friends on twitter will keep me updated on games and scores. whether I like it or not.

Wild, Wild Card

As the wild card finishes up tonight we have a chance to look back and see the craziness that has ensued up to this point in the chase for the final wild card spots.
In the National League it was not quite as hectic. The Pirates and the Reds pretty much closed it out nicely. It was just a big deal for the Pirates because this was the first time since 1992 that they have won a playoff game. If you had the opportunity to watch the game last night then you could have understood the atmosphere in Pittsburgh.
In the American League it came down to the wire and a wild card game before the wild card game. The Indians, Rays, and the Rangers were in a heated battle all the way to the last game. As the dust cleared the Indians were able to pull out the home field advantage by just one game. But the Rays and the Rangers finished with the exact same record forcing them into a single elimination game so that they could get into the single elimination game of the wild card. The Rays took the victory and are set to play my Cleveland Indians tonight in Cleveland.
I personally will be rooting for the Indians the whole playoffs because that is my team. I grew up in Ohio just 40 minutes from Cleveland. So all I have to say is Roll Tribe.

Welcome to the Green Noise

Hello and welcome to Steve's Green Noise. I will be posting about things that make the most noise in the sports industry and in my life.
Well my name is Stephen Green and I am a Sophomore at Slippery Rock University. I am in the sport management major at the rock. Outside of school I am on the cross country and track team and I am also part of the campus radio station, WSRU 88.1. I have a show every Wednesday from 8-10 PM EST.
I am a sport management major because I want to one day either work for or own a company that organizes and runs road races, track events, and/ or cross country races.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy all that is to come.
